What is an Option ROM?

We have an old computer with an Intel N440BX Mortherboard. We're gettign a a 1 long , 2 short beep codes which the online stuff says:

Search for option ROMS. One long, two short beeps on checksum failure of an option ROM

Any idea what that means?

Are there any add-on cards like a SCSI adapter? SCSI adapters that allow booting have an "option ROM" to make that possible.

Check the BIOS to see if Bootable LAN is enabled. Disable it if so.

Go into your BIOS and see if you're in the Hardware Forum.

We can't get into the BIOS. SOon as we turn it on we get one long, two short beeps and nothing comes on the screen. And the board supports SCSI but there are no add-on cards in it, it's built into the board.

Try a different video card.
