What is an appropriate amount to spend on someone for Christmas

He is 18 and I am 25. My income is much more than his, and I don't mind spending $50.
I just dont want him to be like, "Damn that's way to much."

He'll like it and you won't send any wrong message. I would go for something just over $50, so you error on the positive side. Something just under $50 can be good but still look a bit cheap and may send a negative message.

even at 18 years old $50 isn't that much money. If he has an after school job he can afford $50 no problem. That or if you are kinda serious with him you can set "limits". So he gets an idea around how much he should be spending.

For example me and my g/f put $100 limit on each other gift this christmas. So what will end up happening is i get something for $100 and i buy her something that cost $140, but i tell her i got a great deal on it and it only cost $100. This has worked out quite well for many holidays with us.

Well he works, and is in college. I think I will just do a $50 thing and hope he likes his gift.

Yes, we are still together. This year, we just spent last weekend in NYC for a Christmas trip together. That was our main gift to each other, and we decided to each buy something ~$25 to open up near Christmas day.

We are both frugal. Yet we both have wonderful careers and make sufficient money. I just didn't know at the time that she was THAT frugal. She made up the rest of Christmas with something that may get me banned if I post details. So, yes, we are still together.
