Traditionally, Chicago has held the title of "Second City."

Type "second city" into google and see what I mean. Though the most hits will be the "Second City" comedy troop from Chicago.

Chicago is a real city. LA is a mass of suburbs. Take LA city proper and it's very unremarkable as a city.

Yep, a lot of SNL regulars first came from Second City. Examples such as: Mike Myers, Jim Belushi, Gilda Radner, Dan Ackroyd, John Candy, Joan Rivers, George Wendt, Rachel Dratch, Chris Farley, Tim Meadows, Bonnie Hunt, and most imporant of all, John Belushi.

Vote for Philly (next is Chicago), there is absolutely nothing to do in DC besides visit the White House area. Not to mention DC has only 563K people! Philly is 10X more interesting.

If you want to go by sheer size, it would be LA, Chicago, Houston, and then Philly as the largest in the US. I've never been to SF or Houston so can't comment on them. LA seemed really boring to me as well, you have to drive too much. In Chicago or Philly it's much easier to get around just like NYC. :)

Um, I don't believe so. IIRC, it got the name because it was second to New York.

LA easy. It's what NY would be like if they had more room.

Again, for those who do not understand, LA city proper is quite small and unremarkable. What makes the LA AREA cool are the surrounding cities and suburbs. Counting all of those when making this decision would be like counting all of Long Island, parts of upstate New York and parts of Connecticut and New Jersey when considering New York City.

LA in itself was a suckhole when I went. NYC in itself is great. I don't think LI or Westchester really add to NYC like the point you were making with LA (which I agree with).

Well, Long Island has great beaches, very nice suburbs and open areas and does add to NY. And the ritzy suburbs upstate and in Connecticut add to it as well.

But you are correct, it doesn't do as much for NY as the subs do for LA.

Sadly, I'm sure many Americans do, too.

Anyhow, if you are speaking in terms of markets, New York, LA, Miami, Chicago, Houston.
