So, on newegg a lot of the monitors have "Active Matrix, TFT LCD" listed as their panel. I don't see anything about that in the sticky, so what type of panel is it?

Also, is there any sort of database that lets me search for monitors by panel?

All desktop monitors today (worth existing) are active matrix and TFT (thin film transistor). This just refers to the fact that each pixel is controlled by its own transistor. Subtypes include TN, MVA, IPS, etc... Most of the time if they just say "active matrix" it's a TN, the first and most primitive type of active matrix TFT display.

If you see "a-Si TFT" that simply means amorphous silicon which is a desktop type of TFT, as opposed to polycrystalline silicon ("p-Si"), used in TFT projectors.

If viewing angles are below 176, it's just about sure to be a TN. If they're equal to 176, that usually means a 4-domain MVA (P-MVA) or PVA, or S-IPS. If it's 178 it could be S-PVA or S-IPS.
