What is a wedding for an athiest couple like?

I've seen a Christian marry a Christian and have a Christian wedding.
I've seen a Jew marry a Christian and have Jewish wedding.
I've seen an athiest marry a Christian and have a Christian wedding.

But what happens when an atheist marries an athiest? I mean, certainly its nice to have a wedding with a ceremony. Surely with the number of athiest people on this board, somebody has seen or been in this situation.

You can just go down to the courthouse, or you can have a service lacking any religious language. Other than that, it's a lot like any other wedding.

Who leads? Obviously there is no religous leader there.

Justice of the Peace could fit the bill.

justice of the peace. almost anyone can "qualify" to be one if you take a test. i've been to several "atheist" weddings. they are no different really, often held outside

You can rent a hall and have a big shindig that is undistinguishable from a religious ceremony. There are many people who can perform the ceremony. Judge, justice of the peace, etc...

I'll bet a lot of people who are agnostic/athiest get married using ministers for the convienence or to please family.

You could even go to the courthouse and get hitched beforehand and have your dog perform the ceremony later if you want.

But can is it still done in a church?
i don't think Justice of the Peace ceremonies take place in church.

why would they want it in a place of worship anyway?

I have seen it done. But it doesn't happen often. Usually it is when one side of the family is religious and the other is not. Or seperate religions.

Hmm, guess I'll end up getting married on the beach or something.

When the athiest and the christian marry and have a christian wedding, do they just hide the atheist's views from the priest conducting the ceremony?

Or does the priest sign off on it and just remove god from the atheists vows?

People who are Athiest have wedding in churches all the time, they do so because they like the setting and feel that it would provide for a beautiful ceremony. Some churches require that if you are not affiliated with their church that you take a few classes with them before you are allowed to have a wedding there.

In fact there are quite a few non-denominational churches that exist that will let anybody have a wedding there.

Couples that don't want a church wedding can have it anywhere they please; golf course, hotel, Japanese Tea Garden, etc.. they just hire an officiant to perform their ceremony.

why would athiests "like the setting" that shows images and reverence to someone they don't believe in?

Adequate seating, nice architecture?

I expect mine to be outside.

Make the religious parents happy? Mine is going to be in a church to make my mom happy, even though she knows I don't believe and don't practice.

Which reminds me, I gotta call up the local churches to inquire about completing my communion so it'd be easier to get the church to agree. That, and be my nephews godfather.

There is something very natural about getting married in a church-like environment I suppose. Something traditional, much like how people prefer to say traditional vows rather than make their own up. I've been to four weddings, all of them in churches, and although I am not religous, a church wedding is what I know and a church is what I grew up associating with a wedding.

But I have been thinking about this lately, and how my non-religous beliefs will affect my wedding. It would be rather innapropriate to have a wedding in a church, considering I have no religous belief or education.

Tradition. I think it's most likely either the woman or somebody's mother involved here. I've seen it lots of times, even been to a gay (athiest) wedding in a church. Thing is, people have a romantic ideal of marraige, and that does not cease to exist just because they don't beleive in god.

For the marraige to be legal (in my country at least) there must be a justice of the peace or a minister performing the ceremony, but often people seperate it out into two components and have a different person MC the ceremony. A lot of JP's specialize in public speaking though, as they often do ceremonies.

Married athiest couple here. We had a judge perform the ceremony and it was in an outdoor reception area, not a church. Just like a normal wedding I guess - we just had no mention of god or any of that stuff. I guess the one difference is that we started serving drinks before the ceremony began :)
