What is a VKD device?

I just tried to boot up my computer and Windows 98 SE was beginning to start up when a screen came up saying something of the nature:

While initializing device VKD
Data error...You need to restart your computer.

Before the message came up my hard drive made 4 maybe 5 clicking sounds that I have never heard before.

Could anyone please give me some pointers...I know I'll probably have to reformat it. Any help is appreciated.

I think you might mean VXD, but anyways, VXD files are device drivers, namely for system devices such as the motherboard, and various other hardware within the computer.

Seeing are your HDD make clicking sounds, that's usually a sign the drive is dying, which can result in data loss/corruption. It's possible that the vxd files had been corrupted or damaged, and cannot load windows. (Though mind you, I'm assuming those are loud clicking noises, meaning like something physically is clickin within the drive, correct me if I'm wrong). But either way I suggest you do a scandisk from DOS, and run diagnostic software that your HDD manufacturer provides. If all checks out, do a complete format and start again.

VKD is a specific VXD device driver.....it's the device driver for the keyboard.

Perhaps you should try your keyboard in another machine to make sure that it works?

Thanks Andy Hiu, it was the keyboard. I switched keyboards and I still got the clicking sounds but it actually booted in safe mode. I ran Disk Defragmenter and it rebooted in normal mode no problem. Thanks a lot.
