So I am having my laptop diagnosed and someone mentioned the thermal block has malfunctioned which is causing the CPU to overheat. If my guess is correct, then is a thermal block another way of saying heat sink???? There's no way a heat sink can malfunction though.

Yeah. They may be saying that there might be too much thermal paste on the heatsink, making it inefficient at cooling the processor, but if your computer is under warranty, don't try to take the heatsink off otherwise, you will void the warranty.

Hmm dun think that would be the case unless they are charging 200+ for removing thermal paste. Laptop has been working fine for 3 years so i doubt its a thermal paste problem.

Laptops often use heatpipes, which are more complex than plain heatsinks. Steal your laptop back and take care of it yourself.

Forgot to add that I dun think the shop is correct at all in diagnosing it. Well the problem is the laptop randomly shutsdown like someone just pulled the power off. This happens commonly at bootup for like 5 times or so and when it does finally run, it can run for hours so I am sure its not a heat related issue.

Over a three year period of time, a laptop can build up enough dust and dirt to the point that the cooling areas and vents become clogged. This allows rapid heat buildup often resulting in system shutdowns. A good vacuum tool can solve the problem very cheaply.
