What is a suitable HSF for my XP 1800+?

Although this question has probably been rehashed hundreds of times in an equal number of articles scattered about the web, I've been having trouble finding a suitable cooling system which meets my preferred specifications. I would probably attribute this to my own ineptitude or the fact that most "cooling roundups" focus primarily on high performance coolers, but either way I was hoping the kind people of this forum could help me reach a decision. With that said, this is what I'm looking for in a cooler:

Can "suitably" cool a standard AMD Athlon XP 1800+
Nothing terribly expensive, we're talking the 15-20 dollar range shipped
Given those two, the quiest cooler possible

If anyone has knowledge or experience with such an item, or with a place to buy it, I'd be glad to hear your recommendation. Thanks!

JuffoWup25, first off welcome to the forums :)

As for your question, one of the most popular heatsinks for XP chips appears to be the Thermalright AX7. It's an efficient design w/ good heat dissapation, do a search for it and you'll come across numerous threads on it. It's a bit more than your price range, but only by about 5 dollars or so. Hope this helps :)

Thanks for the excellent links fatbaby, but I'd still like to know one thing about the Golden Gate 40 before I buy one. Since that thing comes equipped with a 40CFM YS Tech fan, I was concerned that noise might be a problem, just as many say it is with the 40CFM Delta. Is there anything you can tell me regarding the noise of this fan?

The 40 cfm fan (that comes with the Golden Gate 40) can damned near "fly" by itself. I actually plugged one in and held it by the wiring and it was almost like holding onto a remote controlled airplane; it started to float for gods sake!! :D Believe it or not, the sound was not as bad as I expected it to be though. Yes, it was loud; no doubt about it. But not as loud as some I have tested recently in the same cfm area.
However, and this is a big "however", you don't need that fan to get the kind of performance that you are interested in. Just order the Golden Gate (standard version; you'll still get a fan) and do some shopping around for a fan. Paying only $10.00 for the HS (+shipping of course; but theirs is not too bad) still leaves some room for a different fan. In fact, the "standard" fan that the GG comes with might just do what you want. Remember, it is an all copper HS. Yeah, some are made better than others. The Golden Gate can "hold it's own" against most. Not top of the line but not chickenfeed either.
BTW, I also love the idea of putting an adaptor on that and using a much quieter 80mm fan.

You don't want the volcano 7 if you intend to oc even moderately. The volcano 7+ on the other hand is very good, but noisy on medium and high speeds.

As Starfoxer suggested, the AX7 is the best for the moola now. The slk800 and 600 are a little better but they are also much higher. Just get a good cfm fan with it, something that puts out over 35cfm or so.

If you have a 37cfm 80mm fan then that's all you will need, otherwise that sunon you linked to is a fine choice. ;)

And yes, you did link to the correct ax7 for an amd socket a cpu.

svc raised the price of the ax-7, KDC still has it for $24
