Pulled this from "Hot Deals" on a thread about a good deal for a 300GB Velociraptor:

Person A: "There's not much point in getting these now. Just wait for SSD's to get cheaper and bigger."

Person B: "that's the point, wait ad wait and wait..."

Person A: "In this case, the performance jump from traditional disk drives to SSDs is worth waiting for... "

My understanding is that the Velociraptor series is VERY FAST... What is SSD and when does it come out?

1. Solid State Drive.

2. They are already out, but not quite competitive on the cost/performance ratio yet for most applications.

As an extension to the question, what are the most dependable and quickest <128GB SSDs out there regardless of cost?

Is this still one of the best?

SSD is the way of the future, no moving parts, less energy, more theoretical room for performance increases, etc... Just in the last year they have come from a novelty that cost 10x more than a std drive and with 1/2 the performance and tiny sizes, to the current state where the best SSD can compete with and beat velociraptors and scsii and even sas drives and the cost has come way down and the size has increased to as much a 128gb for the top of the line SSD's and 250gb on slower ones.

We aren't there yet, but a few years from now a mechanical HDD will be a collectors peice

Yep, thats the bad boy AFAIK, two of those in raid0 can actually saturate the SATA 3.0 bus
