What is a shader?

I assume you mean shader in the sense of pixel shader and vertex shaders? Well, if that's the case then the shader term is pretty much a misnomer. It actually does quite a bit more than just "shading". AFAIK it is a hardware unit that allows simple manipulation of pixel and vertex information. Stuff such as color, lighting, position, etc. Tomshardware had a pretty good article on it when he previewed the original GeForce3, you might wanna take a look at his archives. I'm pretty sure Anand would have done a similar article on it.

Dang. I though it was one of these. 🙂
