What is a safe temerature?

Hi,

I have a problem, I cannot get my XP 2000+ to run at under 70 degrees Celsius! I live at 6000 feet and this may be part of the problem; I have a 1700+ that ran at 45 degrees at sea level that now runs at 60 degrees. So altitude and the thin air is probably the issue. The ambient temp is only 20 degrees C, so it is not hot.

I have 3 exhaust fans excluding the PSU fan, and a Cooler Master HAC-V81 (Is this OK as a cooler for an XP 2000+?) on the CPU, seated with Silica Gel, but as soon as I load the CPU (by running Seti) the temp goes over 80, and the max is 90, so it is FAR from ideal!

What temp should I be aiming for for continuous use?

What can I do aside from putting my computer into the freezer? What are the best cooling devices at a reasonable price?

I notice that the HAC-V81 is not recommended by AMD, but it seems like a better fan than some of the coolermaster fans that they do recommend, but perhaps I'm wrong?

Eh, you do have intake fans, right?

Also, check to see if the heatsink is in proper contact with the CPU. Check out
SVC for some good AMD heatsinks, I personally recommend the Thermalright AX-800.

BTW, clean off the Silica Gel and use something worthwhile, like ASIII

Ideal temps would be 30-40 idle and 40 - 50 under load. A lot of people like the thermalright SLK 800 w/ panaflo L1A fan to cut down on noise.
Also like blurry said get rid of that silica gel and put some arctic sliver 3 on it.

The SLK800 works nicely with an L1A and keeps my 1600+ @ 2100+ at about 41C under load. Definitely get some Arctic Silver 3!

umm where are these temp readings from? if from mobos, it'll be hard to say that there is "one" safe temperature range since different mobos measure temp readings differently. i've never used an external temp sensor, but i would assume those would be the best to use if comparing results.

with that in mind, i agree w/ HiTek21 (30-40 idle; 40 - 50 load) [ according to mobo readings]

i myself have a 1700+ tbred-b that i OC-ed to 1834 (roughly 2200+) that fall within the 40 C ranges

tips: tidy up cables, arctic silver, get more fans ;)
