i have a domain with namecheap, and I thought about doing a transfer to godaddy... godaddy is around 7bucks and you get a 2nd year free.

i noticed though when doing a whois through godaddy on my domain, that it says its got a lock on it.. can *I* unlock this or is namecheap holding it so I cannot transfer it for myself.

i read on godaddy's instructions that they cannot do a transfer on locked domains.

You have to contact your current registrar to APPROVE any changes to the domain, such as contact info, service changes, or transfers.

Login to namecheap and slect the domain you want transfer. Click on the "modify registrar lock" for your domain. You can then release the registrar lock so you can transfer the domain.

sweet.. thanks a lot... i just checked out the interface... seems like namecheap offers the lock to protect your domain from others....

i wonder if godaddy has such a feature...

namecheap also has a whois privacy protector on your domain...

wonder if then it's worth to transfer over to godaddy at this point.

I think the privacy protector costs more and isn't included in the yearly domain registration fee. Godaddy offers domain locking, for free, too.

Registrar lock is a means of protection for you so you do not inadvertantly lose your domain for some nefarious reason. I'm not sure of the namecheap process, but you will be able to transfer the domain to another registrar assuming the domain is registered in your name.

If you are using namecheap solely for domain registration purposes, then I think godaddy and namecheap are the same (except for prices).
