I've not been following cpus for a couple of years now since my machine was fine (I had an i7 haswell refresh (lga 1150). Recently the system ceased to post; I suspect it is the mother board though I suppose it might be gpu. I had replaced the 10 year old psu about 1 month ago and all was fine until this afternoon. Anyway the system won't even post (I removed all disks); so I want to upgrade the motherboard/cpu and then reuse my old disks (including boot disk which has windows 10).
-
I'm really unsure which intel generation and cpu i should go with - the motherboard will have to be an itx. A bit of googling suggest maybe z490 board with 10th generation i5 or i7 of some variety but intel loves marketing and has too many variations. I will not bother with over-clocking but want something at least on par of the linear speed of my current cpu (not even sure if that is an i5 or i7 ). Once i know which cpu to get i can find a motherboard that will fit it.

I considered getting a replacement mb for my haswell refresh but why ?

This mb doens't have a beeper :(
I am sure it has speaker pins on the panel header, and you can buy a beeper for 5 of them for $7. But I see you are up now !

go into the bios and change the output for video... easy fix.
I saw that option; it is set to auto - not sure if auto detects which cable is plugged in or if gpu is plugged in. I was going to set it to onboard but then if the onboard video is broken.... i'll have to hit the bios reset button i guess.

I think the original problem is that i didn't have the memory seated correctly. I've had this problem before where the end that doesn't have a clip isn't pushed in all the way even if the clip on the other side has closed.
-
You are correct it has speaker headers - it is dreadfully hard to reach with the mb in the case - i probably have an old speak on one of my atx mother boards somewhere. The layout of this mb is mixed - i mean it is on paper quite nice but in the case it is dreadfully harder to access things than the previous mb. I think this is will be the last time i build an itx system - or at least in an nr200 case; just not worth the pia - the old case was a lot nicer but it couldn't take full length gpu.

MOBO's and headers in a case are a total PITA but, you can route the cables better than pre-attaching them and dropping it into the case. The bottom headers are knuckle scrapers if you don't have tweezers to push them into place. If only OEM's would move that to the right side where everything else lives to make life easier. I suppose there's some trace length issues to deal with if they did that though.

Well the only thing I have left to to do is add the disks and see if it boots; i think i will try that tomorrow. Bit concern the intel fan is not in all the way but i ahve this concern everytime i install an intel cpu for the past 20 years. I can never tell if the push buttoms are clicked in all the way. anyway if it boots tommorrow i'll run prime95 24 hours to test the ram.

One odd thing and this is totally unrelated but it appears the dp output from the gpu has failed. This happened about 6 months ago; hdmi still works fine but now i have to use hdmi :( Seems odd that one connector would fail. This gpu is about 6 years old.

I've had that happen before, on a Polaris GPU.

Most motherboards today only have a clip at one end. You push that first, as soon as it clicks, you push the other end with the clip. If you don't hear 2 clicks for every ram stick, try again.
Is there a stationary hook or something on the left side? Like really the directions should show the left side being installed first and the movable clip side on the right second?

Or is there nothing on the left at all other then a plain slot for memory?

Nothing; as @Markfw said you hear it click; but sometimes when i close the clip it still comes up a little.

prime95 is running; only using 2 threads and 13 gig since the cpu runs hot. If memory passes overnight; I'll take the mb back out sometime next week and put my old heat sink on. That thing was able to keep the haswell refresh around 65c with prime95 and this cpu should be running cooler. With 2 threads it still runs 96c; makes me wonder if the i go the clips locked in on the stock cooler. I really hate those pins and the new knobs doesn't make it obvious which direction to turn them to lock.

On the bright side while it is running hot; it isn't throttling much since it is running at 4.21 ghz.

By the way, when I got the i7-3770 used from someone, I asked the guy to come and install it. The first time, he didn't install it properly. The system booted but the mouse was sluggish and when I ran some benchmark (I forgot which one), the CPU temperature jumped to above 75 degrees. I showed him that and said that this doesn't look right. He removed the heatsink and installed it again. This time I could feel the system being more responsive and the benchmark didn't make the CPU go above 65 degrees.

Well prime95 always pushes the cpu temp wise due to execution of the fpu. Idle temp is 43c. I still think it is hot and i suspect one of the pegs on the intel fan might be off. The system temp is fine - around 45c; and the disks are all fine - around 28-30c; just the cpu is hot so i don't think the case is awful. I'll let hdprime run for 6 or 12 hours and then muck around with the heat sink.

I might not put the old heat sink on; I think i'll play a few games and see how high the cpu get before deciding. As soon as I killed prime a few seconds ago; the temp quickly dropped back to 48c (118); which is not totally unreasonable. Anyway memory seems ok. I'm also happy to report that windows 10 didn't give me a lot of boohoo about the new motherboard drives - so i guess that is one improvement over earlier windows. However, I did have to hunt down my old windows 7 box to re-enter my key to activate. Was a bit surprise the windows 7 keys worked. The version i Have is transferable et all - but it is like what 12 years old ?

You'll want to use the other HS. My idle temps are in the mid 20's with highs up to ~55C.

Otherwise check to make sure you have good pressure and didn't miss tightening a screw / leaving an air gap.

They want people on the newest Windows. I remember going to Win 10 before they said they were going to cut it off, but even today it seems to work. Windows just isn't their money maker anymore. That would be Office and Azure. Probably Xbox too.

What's 11 even like? I'm still on 10 myself. I've been tempted to upgrade since my install is fairly new but it looks terrible.

It's still windows. A few cosmetic changes but, seems stable so far for the past 6 months or so. The underlying changes probably won't make much of a difference though w/o a new system using ADL. I switched to stop the constant nagging for updates that were consuming GB's at a time.

I think ShutUp10++ took care of that. I wish someone had released a GWX panel for Windows 11. I only got the nag screen once about a month ago but nothing after. I'm on 10th gen. Either it doesn't push hard for older platforms or MS got the memo with how annoying the upgrade to 10 was for people.

I wouldn't know. The fact they are removing the option for local accounts for Pro users is enough to keep me away from it.

Check that out. Matrix City sample demo. Damn the graphics are almost photo realistic WITHOUT HDR.

Change GlobalIllumination and Shadows to 1 and reduce the resolution to 1920x1080. It is mind boggling how my old Geforce GTX Titan X (slightly slower than a 1070) is able to render a HUGE city that I can fly over. This is next gen yo!

I use a local account just fine. If you don't want to use a MS account just do the install w//o interne. Otherwise get creative and download an Enterprise ISO ;)

From theverge, "Windows 11 Pro will soon require a Microsoft Account". I originally saw it on Tomshardware. I wonder if there will be a way to bypass this like you could with Windows 10. Also, I don't want to get "creative" and find an Enterprise ISO with who knows what else is in it. Never mind the legal aspects of it.

I mean at this point, what is the difference between Home and Pro? The ability to join a domain? Maybe the ability to use more RAM/CPU cores?
