What is a reasonable amount of time that it should take someone to find a job?

Assuming they live in a big city, have no college education and not much in the way of skills. Do you think it would take days, weeks, months?

Update

So Wednesday of last week she got a job through a temp agency. Working for DHL, picking nursing uniforms and other stuff like that(didn't know DHL did that) so she worked 3 days last week and monday of this week. Tuesday rolls around and I called her while I was at work and says she doesn't feel good, is dizzy and almost fell down the stairs. Does she call her mom to take her to the ER or doctor, no, but needless to say shes not going to work.

I love her to death, but this getting nuts. out of 5 days, she has already missed one. Wonder how long before they let her go?

Depends what they are willing to take. I'd lay money that I could find a job within a few days if it didn't matter what the job was or what it paid.

Yeah I agree with the mcdonalds, but apparently thats not good enough. Ultimately 9.00+ would be ideal. But right now anything is better then nothing

Go fill out an application at a temp agency. They can find work for most people within an hour.

I've never understood why the poor gravitate towards big cities. The standard of living is so much higher that you end up making it impossible to climb out of your hole. You can get a job in the suburbs or even in rural areas without having a car and pay much less for living space and basic necessities.

Thats what I would have thought, but yet my wife has been unemployed for about a month and a half. She is in with a couple of temp agencies. But the way its going, I am pretty sure I am just going to have to quit school and get another job myself.

joshsquall, I move here(Columbus, OH)to go to school, she has lived here her whole life. We are not really poor, if we have jobs we have money, but when one of us is unemployed, then yeah it is hard. The only problem with what you mentioned is yeah its boring. But mainly its not as easy to get a job in the suburbs or rural areas as it is in big cities, at least for me anyway. I have some skill and some education, I could probably have a job paying 10-12 an hour inside of a week. But the suburbs just don't seem to have many jobs available to me.

My problem is is that she is pretty much relying solely on internet job sites. I managed to get her to go out and put in a few applications for the first few days after she lost her last job, but that has pretty much ceased. Any time I bring it up now, it starts a fight and I am tired of fighting. The problem is we just did our taxes and we are getting a decent amount back, and I think she thinks we will be fine since we have that to live off, but we really need to that to pay off other debt.

Tell her to go drive her lazy ass around looking for help wanted signs.

I would say the internet is more geared towards experienced folks or people with degrees. For people lacking skills or education, you'll have to find the jobs in person.

Two weeks. It won't be their dream job, but with the proper living arrangements (roommate?) it should work well enough to support them.

I did that for a few years, worked out pretty well and I had a variety of jobs.

I live just south of Columbus. The last time I was unemployed, it was for about six months, because I refused to get a job at McDonalds or Burger King (and etc), and wanted one that paid better, and that required some kind of intelligence. I stuck with CareerBuilder & Monster, and eventually found something.

If you can type 60+ WPM it should take less than two weeks to get a basic data entry job for $9-10/hr. Staffing companies/temp agencies are the place to start.

Less than an hour. McDonalds and the like are always hiring.

go into a mall and ask EVERY retailer if they'e hiring, and apply.

when he gets an interview, ask the interviewer if their non-mall located stores pay more.

Well I was just in this situation, I was fired from my job on Dec 23 and I just got hired for their competitors on Monday Feb 5. It took a while but I had to go to 4 interviews just for one job and I had prior experience in this field. I guess some might think this is long but this is exactly the same job I was doing prior and I wasn't going to take some minimum wage job and I wanted something with seniority.

Anybody can find a job in a few days at a supermarket, fast food, or crappy retail store. Or on the manual labor side in a warehouse or unloading trucks (decent paying early AM shifts are at UPS/FEDEX stations for students), doing grunt construction work (sheetrock, insulation etc...), or sweeping floors and scrubbing toilets.

You are only going to find these jobs by going place to place and asking the manager if they are hiring. My advice is to start at a strip mall type place near home with various stores and walk from one to the next talking to store managers. It does not matter what they sell.

Check the newspaper daily and check out temp agencies too.
