a podcast is an audio program (think NPR vignette) that you can download and play on your PC or an Ipod. they are typically serials (weekly or monthly).

Some are good. Others kind of suck.....but they can be very focused on a particular interst. One is focused on digital photography, another is a podcast of a local church service for people who can't be present. One I listened to for a while was about hiking and backpacking (think appalachian trail here). The audience was very narrow and focused so no main stream media outlet would ever pick it up, but on a podcast, it is cheap to produce and its audience can have access. It is pretty cool....although I must admit that since my first few listens, I haven't really tried them in a while.

And, NO, you certainly do not need an iPod to listen to them. iTunes does have a pretty cool Podcast update utility, though.... I'd recommend giving it a try, even if you do not have an iPod.

Agree, here is a screen shot from the iTunes podcast page. It tracks which podcasts you're subscribed to, and with a click of the button it checks all of them for any updates.
