What is a "normal" amount of calories burnt at the gym?

Yesterday I bought a gym pass and started going (first time in over 3 years!)

I was on the cross trainer for a 30 minute session and it said I used 440 calories when I finished. Could this be correct? It seems a little high to me--I expected more like 200.

I'm curious what others burn at the gym. Specifically what exercises you do and for how long.

Depends on the machine. Sometimes a treadmill would register a miserable 30 cals, whereas an elliptical would run many times that.

Also depends on you - the more you weigh, the more calories you expend moving.

Depends on how hard you went. I would say that the average person would kill off around 500 an hour on that. Walking I think is in the 350 range for an hour, whereas serious running will be up near 1000/hour.

400+ for 30 minutes doesn't seem too far-fetched. When I actually do cardio, I'll usually burn about 220 in 15 minutes or so.

uhh, that's pretty much irrelevant. my sissy ass g/f jumps on the elliptical and within the same time frame i'll burn 3-4 times as much on the treadmill.

oh and to the OP, 400 cals in 30 minutes is not at all high. when i was on the crew team at school i'd burn close to 1000 calories for 40 minutes on an erg machine. i barely do cardio anymore, i hate it.

I technically "burn" 400 calories in 20 or so minutes after a workout on any number of the cardio machines, only because i weight about 270, so its a lot easier for me to burn off calories.

But thats not counting the calorie burning i get from lifting weights, which i do for 1-2 hours before getting on a cardio machine. In any given day, I'd say i burn 600-800 calories in one gym session, and im usually burning more cals all day for recovery, and also cause i'm on hot rox.

You even have a benefit of hittin the gym before you eat anything, because once you've had a good workout you burn the food you eat after wards at a rate of 300% faster. ( source of this info is Body-for-Life book, which i don't really trust)

I burn about 700 calories when I run each day--I run about 8-11 miles/day. I don't burn a lot, because I only weigh 110lbs.

I think elliptical machines are just pin ball games, the calories seem sooo much higher and it hardly seems to do anything:roll: My advice is that if you have a tarmac, run on it or do some rowing. Nothing beats swimming though. On an average burning 400 calories on activities like these will get anyone into shape very very fast.
