WHAT IS A NEF?!!?

According to legend, there was a guy named "Nef" who posted a lot of useless crap, much like this thread. So gradually the term "nef" came to mean "a useless post".
 
ok so we know the meaning of a nef. But what does the word actually come from? Is it something only computer nerds know?
