What is a "morgan" cpu?

I have a DFI AK-74EC mobo. I was going to buy a duron 1.2gb cpu, but according to DFI's web page, the 1.2 duron "morgan" will not work! Any ideas why it will not work? Has the voltage or pinout changed? My current cpu is a duron 800.

Thank you

Mrogan core is the latest die for the Durons , runs at same bus speed as all Durons .
Not sure on the voltage required for these as opposed to the spitfire core ( upto 1ghz).

yeah the 1.2 duron is of the morgan core which is a stripped down xp core... i dont know why it wont work with teh dfi board, but i have heard before about certain boards not working with certain durons..

all durons clocked at 1.0 and higher are morgan cores

My guess is that the duron morgan core would not work on that motherboard because their product support hasn't bothered working on an upgraded bios to handle the chip.

And the die size is NOT smaller on the morgan than the palomino. They're both .18.

Well that board uses the KT133/686a chipset and since it doesn't have multiplier adjustments(board must auto-detect CPU) I think the guess that the bios has not been updated to included it in the CPU ID table is probably the right answer as to why it won't work with your board. BTW, the Morgan has hardware data prefetch, SSE, and improved power and heat characteristics compared to the spitfire.

The Morgan core also has SSE support. There is supposed to be a 3rd party patch that enables the SSE variable if your motherboard does not have BIOS support for it.

So has anyone successfully put a morgan/duron in a board that is supposedly not compatable? I was going to buy a duron 1.2 for $60. What would happen if I put the chip in anyways, would it just not POST or damage the cpu?

Thanks you.

Yes and it worked, but I haven't tried it with a board without multiplier adjustments.
