what is a modern replacement for Western Digital WD1200AB ?

But you are still right....*any* PATA IDE drive will do.

On the old ATA100/133 interface, getting the largest capacity size and not filling it up much is the best way to get max performance out of an antiquated interface type.

Might want to say what size the HD should be?

This is a Western Digital 100 ATA 160Gig EIDE Hard drive.

Not much is available in EIDE hard drives any more. The link you gave goes to a lower speed 5400 rpm drive. Going to a 7200 rpm drive might be a significant improvement.

You might consider just getting a new computer. The older a computer gets the more likely that something else will break down and the money you spend on it will not be worth it. All the new motherboards use SATA hard drives. This would not work with most new motherboards.

You could just go to the dumpster and find old hard drives that would work. Lots of old computers that bit the dust might have a hard drive that would work. Maybe a friend has an old hard drive sitting around in some old computer they dont use anymore.
