what is a J.D.? (degree question)

It is a juris doctor - basically a law-school degree. It is a 3-year graduate degree, and is required to take the bar and practice law in every state, I believe (for a long time in Vermont and perhaps other states, it used to be possible to take the bar without a JD, but I believe this is no longer the case).
