What is a .img file ?

I can find references to this format all over the internet but I cannot find one that tell what program creates them and exactly what kind of file it is.

btw: I'm not talking about Paint Shop Pro files.

Yep, this is it but what program created it and is it a compressed file like a zip ?

theres a billion prgrams that could have created it
Its not "compressed" per say. You can burn it to CD/DVD, mount it with Daemon Tools, Alcohol 120% etc, and/or unpack it if you like.

So it's like an ISO file ?

.img is like an .iso - you can even rename it to .iso & burn to cd with Nero
