What is a hobby that I can pick up in a couple of weeks?

OK, so I'm stuck on the east coast for the summer. Everyone I know lives in Texas. I live in a very rural city so it's extremely hard for me to meet people that are outside of the company I work for, and hardly anyone I work with is in my age range, they're all a tad older. I enjoy the nightlife up here, but I have to work at 8 which precludes festivities from occuring on most weeknights. I want something that I can do during the week at will. I also don't want to invest a lot of money into something I already have purchased and left back in Texas - this includes anything involving tools, since I have a couple of hundred bucks worth of stuff just sititng in self-storage, that I didn't bring with me.

I was thinking that maybe I could learn how to actually take decent pictures. I was thinking about getting a Canon A80 kit with tripod and some sort of book to help me. I could do stuff like Habitat for Humanity, but most of that's confined to the weekend where I have plenty of options. I just don't have anything to do weeknights, and between working and lifting I really need something else to occupy my time that isn't a computer game or chatting on AIM or something.

Photography is a good idea. I'd suggest reading about it online and checking out books from the local library rather than buying one.
Cooking - yummmmm....
Read.

I don't have many cooking utensils up here. I was put up in an extended stay suite for the 12 weeks I'm here, and they provided most of what I have (besides entertainment stuff like computers/dvd player/etc), this includes their cookware which is pretty substandard. Since it's expensive, and I have a good amount of stuff in Texas, I don't want to have two sets of stuff.

I don't have any interest in dancing really. I wouldn't mind picking up a new sport but I'm not sure what I can do up here, the city is like 10 square miles.
