What is a good set of $50 speakers

Logitech X620.

Have a set myself. Sound very nice for the money, and very versatile....can be switched from 6.1 to 5.1 to 2.1 or whatever config you want in software, no plug switching required.

it doesnt matter what speaker you have just get a high end or mid end receiver and it will rock you like never before

Logitech Z-640s are nice not many places sell them but I think office max has them for $49, they have great sound, long cables and a nice convenient control on the center speaker. The X-530s have control on the right speaker and shorter cables, either one is nice but I like the Z-640s. If you don't want surround Logitechs Z-3 are nice in both looks and sound quality, bit boomy if the subs to high but after a little adjustment they are awesome.
