What is a good router?

My friend is looking for a new router and is wondering what make/model he should buy.
Any suggestions on a (wired) router? Thanks.

Definitely look into D-Link, you CANNOT go wrong my friend. I was having issues with my Linksys w/e router, it always dropped my connection, and then I got Netgear, eh w/e, and then I got this D-Link DI-514, and it has been great so far.

i'm using a linksys router and it works fine, never had any problems with it. though i can't comment on any other brand since i haven't used any other ones - my linksys has been chugging along for a couple of years now. 🙂

they're pretty much all the same. I prefer netgear for the looks, though. a nice sleek white/silver router fits in better on my desktop than a clunky blueberry router.

The new netgear look doesn't go well with the rest of my equipment. 🙁

Now that I think about it, if I converted the rest of my systems to sonatas it wouldn't be too bad... But it still doesn't go with the walls and furniture... 😛

I had my Linksys for years, no problems at all. 4-port Linksys router. Probably the best piece of hardware I've ever owned - never broke on me. I upgraded to wireless, but I still keep it around just in case 🙂

I've purchased 2 routers in my lifetime, and neither of which have worked correctly.
my Linksys was a pile, dropped my connection to the point where I could only use my internet when it was plugged directly into my PC.
and now my latest GVC router I got cause it was cheap, and apparently made by D-Link, but I can't access the setup of the router, the html web based setup WILL NOT come up no matter what I do, the guys at GNET told me to RMA it. retarded.
so I can't give any recommendation on routers, seeing as I've never had one that worked correctly. pathetic.

I just bought a Belkin last week and its working good so far. I did have to call the support line to get it configured properly but it wasnt bad...I just needed to add the correct gateway. It was $49.99 at MicroCenter minus an instant $15 rebate, and another $20 mail-in rebate....so comes out to like 15 bucks. Cant beat that. Not sure if that deal is still going on though.

Cisco makes wonderful routers but probably not recommended for home use. I've setup over 15 Linksys routers without any problems but to be honets they are all pretty much the same....

I picked up a Linksys Wireless-B router a few months back and I've been using it wired. Works like a dream and looks pretty cool too. The price was also good on it - not the cheapest, and not the most expensive. I'd say Linksys or D-Link or Netgear would do just fine. Thankfully there aren't any "Zoltrix" brand routers that I've seen. Heh, heh, heh 😀

Buy the one that's $15 after rebates...

I've had great luck with netgear, d-link, and even a pseudo-no-name brand router (hawking). Unless you can find a reputable review that says there is a real issue with a particular model, they pretty much all work well.

Also, lots of wireless routers (especially 'b' ones) are as cheap as the wired ones, and you can turn off the wireless access. If there's ever any chance of it being useful, you might as well get one, since they mostly have the same 4-port 10/100 switch as the wired-only routers use.

I had a D-link DI-701 gateway for awhile - then it just mysteriously died one day. It'd show power, but that was it - the power LED would light, and nothing else would happen. No idea. Replaced with a DI-704. Then, after maybe a year with that, it started dropping connections about every 20 seconds. Replaced it with an SMC Barricade. That thing will go about 2-3 weeks before the connection starts getting laggy and weird. Reboot router then, and everything's fine.

sounds like bad power maybe - that's too many times to have that happen with different pieces of equipment...

My only router experience is with D-Link, and they have been trouble free. I've got other things from NetGear (a printer server and a switch) and have had no problems with them.

I've used a D-Link DI-804 for three plus years now. It is no longer made nor are firmware upgrades provided, but it keeps plugging along.
