What is a good proprietary chat program?

We all have AIM, ICQ or whatever but my house mate and I want a unique one that we can leave on all of the time and just use between ourselves.

It's going to be like a chat intercom..

mIRC?

yeah that is what i am thinking it would be nice to find one that is just really really simple though.

jeez none of these are for osx

jeez, you didn't specify osX until after some of the suggestions were made.

i know i just didn't expect it to be an issue.

It's not being developed anymore (just bugfix releases), but BitWise IM is very nice:

It's got a cool whiteboard feature. It also uses direct connections, so things should be super fast for LAN usage.

skype?

Have a good headset and internet connection though.

Skype is the best, I'd definitely recommend it. I am on it all day long, just sits in my taskbar in case anyone wants to chat. I really like it.

Only gripe is that if you login to your account on another PC, it doesn't save you contact list. But I agree with yovon, have a good headset in case you want to voice chat.
