Good question.

I'd also like to know how these occur in the first place. Is it when the computer is labouring too hard while encoding? Scratches on the disk?

Some crackles are put into songs intentionaly...ull see that in hiphop a lot. Also a lot of songs aren't ripped of cd, most of the first mp3s that hit the net are rips from records from dj record pools where they get songs months before they hit the stores.

I know it can be done with cooledit pro but that would prolly be complicated, i suggest searching download.com....i have a feeling soundforge mite do it as well.

I remember way back in 1998 when everything used to be garbled I used a program called Uncook to fix the files. Search for an unpop or antipop utility to fix your song.... better just to get a new one though
