i need something free which will make pictures i scan smaller in size. right now i'm using Corel PhotoHouse and it sucks. when i make it a small jpg file at 150x150 dpi it's still well over 100k, which isn't small enough for web pages. anyone have any good software? it just has to give me high quality, small sized jpg's, no other gimmicks and features :)

On my Mac, I use a combination of Adobe Photoshop and Macromedia Fireworks.

I think Adobe has a new web editing program called Go Live that will better work with Photoshop.

As for free...this is an expensive industry...even Paint Shop Pro costs $100.

ahhhh! i don't want to spend $100USD(so it's like $160cnd) on something with a bunch of stuff i don't need! all i need to do is shrink pictures and compress them... is that so much to ask from the software industry? :p

you should be able to adjust the compression facotr used when saving the JPEG file. Also every time you save a JPEG file it should become smaller.

Just a little tip...don't know if free programs do it...

A lot of times, you can reduce the size and increase compression by blurring the image at "1."

Maybe it's just the program. Here is an image that I scanned and compressed that's only 114k but it's 700x1008 pixels probably 90% quality. Something's definately up...

Staples in U.S. has MGI PhotoSuite 4.0 Platinum for free after rebate. Don't know whether this software does what you want, and don't know if you have Staples in Ontario.
