I installed 2000 Pro on a 200MHZ AMDK6/2 with 32MB of RAM.
Now if you wanted to do anything more than look at the desktop it took some time to load but worked fine running an FTP.

You might want to try Red Hat or Mandrake Linux with Samba. The combination would do alot better on the machine.

Debian Linux.

Red Hat Linux 6.2

I think the free BSDs are excellent choices as well, although I have limited experience with them.

Oh, and just to be clear, Samba is the software suite to share/serve files.

I have Win2K installed on a P200 w/ 64MB Ram and use it as a small ftp/http server (not IIS). Runs well enough to do the job :)

Your best bet is gonna be Win NT 4.0

I have it running on a p133 w/ 56mb just fine.

If you must run Windows, NT 4 is your best bet. I'd put Linux on it, especially if it's not going to be a workstation you don't need memory wasted on a GUI.

Another vote for NT4 if you have to run Windows. If not, a stripped down version of linux like Slackware, or FreeBSD running only CLI. GUI's suck up a lot of resources.

hands down linux.

if you're not affraid of a challenge.

i'm running linux on a p100. it runs www server, ftp server, internet email and a smb (file server), plus other goodies...

with an uptime of about 8 months... i leave home and forget about the thing come back and its still going strong. only time i shut this thing off is once when power went out and my ups only had enough backup juice for about 15minutes.

never had a problem with it.

Stay away from the 9x systems for a seldom used file server.

it will crash once a month, even if you just let it sit.... If you use it, it will be more often.

2k will run but will run like a dog with 32MB. Even if you can get 48, it might be ok, but 32 is baaaad news.

I would go with NT4 and put the newest service pack on it. It will work for simple file sharing, etc.
