What is a good office barebones setup nowadays?

<< We use Dell GX150 at work. 1Ghz/256MB/onboard NIC/Vid/Sound. Sorry, don't know how much they cost... >>

Those GX150's are about $1200. Nice machines. We hav ethe GX110's at my work and they havent let us down. I really like the 3 yr. next day parts/labor. We had a laptop LCD get dro... uhhh... i mean die on us and they came out and fixed it the next day, plus they replaced the keyboard, which was wearing out, for free!

We used to order GX110. Someone managed to order those things without CD-ROMs for us 😀. It only took Dell like 2 months to get them to us...

If you don't need office gaming then wal-mart has 1 GHz duron & celeron for $400 w/o OS or monitor. 1 GHz is 2-3 times as much power as you'll ever need for MS Office 🙂

eMachines, HP, Compaq, Dell should all have similar machines (but with XP installed) for $500-700. Not much difference between boxes with "intel integrated AGP video" only thing to watch for is you should get at least 256 MB of RAM for XP (or even upgrade to 384 or 512). You might want the RAM preinstalled as getting to the DIMM slots on many microtower systems is a pain.

We've had some strange deaths like that too 😉 We use Compaq, but same diff.

<< man..............
we aren't looking to spend that much!!

just a couple hundred a machine is good!

why don't you look into low profile systems, I was always very much in favor of mid-tower solutions that did not include built in components like video and sound.A closer look at these small systems and talking with someone who has extensive experience in building/supporting them has changed my opinion quite a bit. Low profile = a space and money saving option for business. You could probably cut a decent deal by having them custom built to fit your company's particular configuration needs as well.I'd much rather deal with a a small shop or reputable independent contractor than be on the phone trying to get service and support for an e-machine or shudder.. a compaq

Not really sure but my work computer does the job and had it for about a year now:

p3 866, 256mb ram, slow arse 15 gig HD, built-in 10/100, sound, and 4mb video on 21" monitor.

I have at least 10 windows open at all times 8 hours a day 5 days a week and it does pretty good...
