What is a good media streaming server software?

I have a small home server in my basement that houses a bunch of music and movies. Im looking for a program that can host my entire collection and allow me to remotely connect to it and stream video and music files. Ive used tversity before and for the most part liked it but lately I am having problems with it and I dont really care for the newest versions. Are there any other server side programs that can stream media? Being able to transcode would be a plus and it has to be able to compress the bit rate to accommodate bandwidth.
