What is a good hourly rate for ASP programming

I was thinking of quoting a potential client a base project fee for all explicitly stated requirements and then an hourly rate for any ideas he decides to add in beyond that.

I am not sure what the going rate is for C# ASP programming w/ web design. We would be building the site from scratch.

What should I charge for the hourly rate and does my approach seem sound?

If you're doing ground-up development, you need to do an estimation of total time/$ too. If the client has in his head it's an 8 hour project and it takes 40 hours, he's not going to want to pay.

You could give an estimate then have an equitable way of sharing the costs if it goes over.

It depends on what is going into the site. Are you just making Web pages with some basic functionality behind them, or is this a full-blown Web app where you'll need to do database design/implementation and heavy code-behind?

It really boils down to how much expertise is required to complete the project. For a basic project, I'd charge about $40/hour. If it requires my entire range of experience and expertise, then it can go as high as $65 - $75 per hour.

That's about what I was thinking too. However, also important is to discern how much ticky-tack questions and minor changes he's going to ask for in the future. I prefer to build that into up front costs and not charge for ticky-tack stuff later. Makes me seem more generous even though it evens out.

Myself and another person will be developing the site from the ground up based on this person's proposal. He is going to give us the proposal formally on Saturday, but I have requested the PowerPoints and flowchart(s) ahead of time so I can walk in there more prepared and be able to give a better estimate. It sounds like its going to need to create a forum of sorts and development of a database at the bare minimum. It sounds like it may be a toned down myspace.

As both of us are fresh out of our C# ASP classes I think charging more than $40/hr is pushing it.

As it would save our sanity and allow us to focus creativity on other parts of the site, is there a commercial ASP forum that can be customized enough so that it doesn't look like forums that exist on every other site? I'd rather not create a forum from the ground up.

I believe the asp.net forum on the asp.net site is somewhat customizeable and free.
