What is a good free encryption software

I picked up an 8 gb sandisk cruzer which has the u3 system on it. The only reason I didn't remove it right away is because I want to have the password protection in case I lose it. Is there a free or opensource program that I can use to simply encrypt the contents of the drive so that it cant be accessed without a password? AES encryption would be preferred. I would like to get rid of u3 as it takes too long to come up when you plug it into a system and it just seems clunky with it fake cd-rom drive that comes up so the autoplay thingy can work.
