What is a good entry level digital camera for about $200-$300

My mom needs a new digital camera, or more like her own digital camera. She has been using my Olympus 3030z which cost about $800 few years ago when it was new and it has probably around $250 worth of accesories for it. Now I'm hopefully leaving the country for school so she needs a new camera.

She saw the Canon A310 and thought it was nice but I'm not so sure since it doesnt have optical zoom, only digital.

What do you recomend?
