what is a good Digital camera to buy?

im on the market for a digital camera. I really know nothing about them and just wanted some opinions on whats a good one to buy.

I have around $700 or less, and that it pretty much the limit i can spend.

I belong to reefcentral message board. this thread pops up frequently. The hands down winner is Nikon Coolpix 995, especially for close-ups. Right now it runs 700-800, but if you run a search at reef central,someone described getting it for around 500 using American Express Blue. Check out the photography forum for awesome pictures!

Do you want small and compact, or big and full featured?

That would go a long way to understanding what to suggest.

My preference is small and compact. If I have a big camera, it never goes any where with me. My choice is a Canon S30/S40. Great features in a pocket sized camera.

I own a Canon A2, 2 Mega pixel, I am extremely satisfied and pleased. I compared it to
Nikon, Kodak, Fuji and Olympus. I found its colors, features and ergonomics to be the best.

Since you have about $700, you should be able to get a Canon G2, a 4 Mp unit. If you have
an American Express "blue" you can price match with the cheaper, sleezier internet shops in
Brooklyn and possibly get it for a lot under $700.

I've been using a Canon G1 (3.3 Megapixel) and I love it. It takes some excellent pictures and is relatively easy to use. For $700.00 you should be able to get one along with a 128 or 256 MB compact flash card. It's been discontinued but there are still some online vendors stocking it cheap. The G2 is the replacement (4 Megapixel); check the reviews on both at DP Review as posted earlier. There are a lot people that say the G1 still takes better photos than the G2 even being a 3 MP vice the G2's 4 MP.

The key features that sold me on the Canon G1 were: swivel LCD screen (when not in use the screen is protected from being scratched), USB support, compact flash Type I AND II support (very few digicams support both), hot shoe for using an external flash, removeable lens for using a fixed length Canon lens, and at least 3 Megapixel resolution. And most importantly, the lithium-ion battery that is included lasts a hell of a long time on a single charge; it's the same one that Canon uses in some of its digital camcorders. It charges inside of the digicam which is nice. The included s/w, ZoomBrowser, is easy to use and works fine for me.

I keep my photo settings at 3 MP and using JPEG compression I can store 252 images on a single 128 MB SanDisk CF card. More pics than I care to deal with. You can also take 30 second movie clips...

I just got a low end Fuji finepix and most say these fuji take great outdoor pics but inside is another story, If i had the cash I would go for the canon G1 or G2. or even a Canon PowerShot S110,

Sony DSC-F707. The ultimate consumer camera. It costs a little more, you can find it for about $850 on cnet, but it's well worth the money. If you are even considering getting into heavy photography this camera should be it.

I know being a newbie to digcam I dont think I would dive right into a $700 one, I think spending around $400 on your first one will get you a very nice camera, but thats just me.

Check out the Minolta Dimage X, which is about to be released soon... it has an internal refracted 3x optical zoom that doesn't extend outside the camera! www.minolta.com . I personally have an s110 elph, and i just can't get enough attention for using it. So far, everyone who's seen it absolutely loves its size and picture quality
