What is a good cheap receiver with an optical input?

I just bought a Samsung HDTV, and I was planning to connect the audio output from the TV to my 25 year old Realistic receiver. This is the way I had my JVC TV connected and it worked great because the audio output from the TV was controlled by the volume control on the TV. No need for a remote with the receiver.

The Samsung's analog audio output is a constant level. It also doesn't output anything when I'm watching a DVD that is progressive scan. The TV has an optical audio output, and I'm wondering if the optical audio output will work with the progressive scan DVD input.

This is the Samsung TXR3079 for those who are interested...

I'd like to get a cheap receiver with an optical input. I have a pair of JBL bookshelf speakers that I like, so no need for speakers or 5.1/6.1 etc.

EDIT: I'd like to keep it under $150 if possible.

Sherwood is OK, Pioneer or a refurb Onkyo 502 or 503 also fits that price.

Do you also need analog 5.1 to hook up a PC soundcard for multichannel gaming? Be careful some under-$200 receivers don't have analog 5.1

Did you play around in the TV option menus? Some TVs have an option where you can set the output to a constant level (use receiver to control volume), or switch it to be variable with the volume control on the TV.

Just something to check out before dropping the $$. Of course, if you've done this already, then please disregard.

Circuit city is a good place to look for new units.
The Sherwoods are below $150 consistently.

Pioneer 515 goes on sale for $150 from time to time, and the Onkyo 303 also.

Rather than spending $150 on a new receiver, you might want to see if you can change things around a bit.

You're sure you don't want to use your receiver remote for volume? Do you have a learning remote?

If you ran the audio from all sources to the receiver and then had a learning remote, you should be able to control everything with one remote still.
Is the DVD player integrated into the TV, or is a stand-alone player?

I've got a decent RCA 3900 something or other, it's a few years old now so it just has the composite video inputs, but newer ones have s-video/component/DVI inputs too. You can find them for pretty cheap, they're mostly based off the same parts you'll find in Sony's, minus some of the nicer high-end features that Sony puts into their boxes.

So I've done a lot of checking into this tonight.
I ended up calling Samsung and they said that the low quality inputs and the TV tuner use the analog audio output, but the high def inputs use the optical output. Therefore, I'm looking for something to convert the optical output to analog, but I'm not having much luck. Does anyone know if a digital to analog converter is available?
