Good choice, i would of done the same. With the ecm motor you can fiddle around with fan speeds like no other.
Inded. I ended up with a modulating furnace along with a variable speed heat pump.
The furnace is basically inaudiable when running, even standing next to it.
Dont be alamared, most likey it will run significanlty longer than your current unit.
In cooling mode espically, the HP and furnace almost never turn off, yet my bills are way less because it runs in a low gear. Neat bits of tech for sure.
I got 3-4 quotes when I replaced my HVAC unit 5 years ago. The most affordable of the major brands for me was American Standard. It's the same company that makes Trane... Carrier was more expensive and ratings/reviews were about the same. Just research the brands and remember that some dealers may get more markup for certain brands.
If you ever see brands like Goodman out there, they are decent units...but cheap and don't have the same control over their distribution because they sell in bulk to contractors. Carrier and the other big companies try to control the distribution to keep their prices high.
Edit: I need to add...I bought a dual-fuel system. It switches from electric heat-pump mode to the natural gas furnace when the temp gets below 40 degrees. This helps efficiency since the heat pump barely has to do anything between 40-60 degrees. In all cases, I like having my air handler circulating air.
Carrier is so secretive about everything. I'm trying to see if I'm getting a fair deal but I can't even find the retail price on the furnace online.
Many companies don't offer their prices online, because they are first hand distributors, therefore prices vary, and you wont ever find two identical prices. The best thing to do is to find a distributor online service that specializes in items like that and get their quote.
It's not just Carrier. That's why I suggest getting quotes from multiple companies selling different brands. I handled my estimates the same way I do in the office for government bids. I got at least 3 and put them against each other....telling each company that they would be considered based on price vs function. I gave them a list of my requirements and ended up with prices ranging from $7500-12500 for the same thing. Carrier was the most expensive...Trane was second most expensive. I went with the American Standard system that was $7500 and it has performed great. My electric bill dropped from $150-300/month to $80-145/month. Summer months are higher due to a dehumidifier I run and warmer temps..Carrier is so secretive about everything. One more note: I just read your comment about it going in the crawlspace. That's where I had mine mounted. They hung it from the floor joists and mounted the air handler sideways down there.
Based on your findings I would be getting ripped off if I got the Comfort 80.
However I am getting a extremely good deal with the Infinity 96.
