What is a good bitrate for these MPEG specs?

I am trying to make backups of some of my DVDs by ripping them on to my hard drive. I want to convert them to MPEGs to save space. The aspect ratio for one of my DVDs is 16:9. So what resolution and bitrate should I convert the .VOB files to? I want it to be high quality but I don't want the bitrate so high that the video playback skips. Thanks.

Divx doesn't offer flexibility to play in the numberor devices as mpeg...

If you used vcd or mpegs of about 1mbit it should play in most all dvd-players...
If you used svcd with rates of about 2mbits there is still a good chance it will play in most dvdplayers

rates higher or lower can be burnt onto a dvd-r format with dvd authoring and played on newer dvd players....

Divx!!! what codec...what settings...and likley you wont be able to play in any dvd-players except 1 or 2 especially made for it....basically toshiba dvd-roms put into a cheaply made case housing...

Divx for archiving and cpu use or exported through a tv-out to a close proximity tv can be quite effective though.

I do both!!!

I don't understand a word on that site. Its Greek to me. All I want to do is take my .VOB files and convert them to MPEG or DivX in a high resolution but retaining the aspect ratio so the image doesn't look squashed. What is a good app for converting from .VOB to DivX?

go to www.doom9.org and download the gknot rippack and then go to the guide page and follow step by step....

vob files need to be ran through a program like DVD2AVI where they are basically separated into vodeo frames and audio tracks and usually there are multiple ones of those...

Then you g ointo a program like gknot that you tell it the size of the file you want.The quality level of the soundtrack in mp3 form, or you could leave in ac3 form and merge back after video file is converted. Most apps wont play this except powerdivx. In this file you set the resolution to any size and basically keep aspect perfectly and just delete the blak bars. the TV or pc will full screen playback will just put them back anyways. You just don't want to waste bitrate on encoding black space for every frame which camn be 170,000 in a 2 hour movie...

Encoding is not a straightfroward A -> B thing.

True dat. With CCE I am getting excellent SVCD-spec MPEG2 even at 1Mbps ( up to 90 min on 1 SVCD). No visible difference from DVD (edit: DVD-525 lines, SVCD-480 lines). Which a lot better than most DiVX files I see.

Go DVD2SVCD and CCE!

Btw, the vob files contain compressed MPEG2 already. You can extract the mpg files, but you will not save any space. The only way to save space is to re-encode them, that's what everyone is talking about here.
