What is a good 17" LCD monitor for gaming?

Easily the best 17" LCD for gaming is the Hitachi CML174. It is available in black or white, whatever your preference is. It has almost TWICE as good of a pixel response time (16ms) then the other high-end ones. Unfortunately, those awesome specs reflect in it's price, $630. I guess that is what you pay for performance. But for gaming and generaly anything that moves fast, nothing can beat it.

I've got a Samsung 172T LCD monitor, its absolutely excellent. might want to check it out in a showroom or shop or something if you can. response times may look good on paper but you really have to see something with your own eyes to get a proper view of how good it is.

it seems to This Ignorant Buffoon that all these LCDs have 250 cd/m^2 brightness; is there a reason for that?

because its plenty - unless you are going to be using your screen at the beach or in a brightly lit factory situation.

More important are contrast and response times. Bascially, the terchnology has matured to the point where the average user is well satisfied by most current production panels. Gamers always want more, are willing to pay more, and sometimes get their money's worth.

The recent head-to-head comparison between the latest greatest high dollar gamer screen and a mid-pack panel was far from compelling unless you just have to have the bleeding edge gear.
