What is a domain?

I've read and know a tiny bit about computers being a part of a domain, but i've never really been able to grasp what the advantages to this are and why someone would want to create a domain. I'm looking to create a more more seamless network at my house and was just wondering if this would be something i'd be interested in setting up.

So any info you have - lay it on me 🙂

To the OP I don't think you want to set up a domain at your house, a simple workgroup will be much easier for you to manage.

Already have a workgroup, just always looking to improve it.
