What is a "digital speaker"

I have a Cambridge Soundworks 3 piece speaker set (operates as 2 speakers) that is labelled "digital speakers". The speakers are powered.

I just got a new puter with an on board audio card (Via AC97) that only has a "line-out" jack. The digital speakers do not work.

They were working before on a Soundblaster Live 5.1 card but I do not remember if I connecetd them to a different jack than "line -out".

Can someone please explain if I am screwed up or something.

TIA

Often when referring to Digital Speakers related to computers, it means that the speakers connect directly to the SPDIF output - often with an optical fiber cable. Usually they will also have an analog input so they can work from the Line Out as well.

exactly

a speaker is a resistor...you cant send digital signals to it because you could only get 2 tones, 0 and 1, and i dunno about you, but i like music with more than 2 tones

Erm, that's like saying there's no such thing as a digital monitor. Don't be an ass. The signal is digital.

what are you talking about? you can send a digital signal to the receiver, but speakers can not play a digital wave

i dont remember exactly, but i think 0 can have a voltage...maybe 2 volts? and 1 has a voltage of 5v? maybe 0 is 0v, but i was at georgia tech touring the campus and i went into the EE labs...they were working with sending signals and i asked how it determines whether it is a 1 or 0, and i THINK he told me both 0 and 1 have a voltage

well now that were totaly off the subject , i think your right in that most binary devises just see a differance in voltage as the siginal for off\on open\close whatever.

Master of the obvious! The digital signal is not sent directly to the coil. It is interpreted and converted to analog.

Of course there is. There's never a reason to be polite.
i was explaining it to dundevil.
Your explanation was grossly oversimplified and inaccurate. dundevil wanted to know why the speakers didn't work, not about the mechanics of digital data. He was sending an analog signal to digital speakers. In that case, your argument is still void.
A "digital speaker" refers to the entire device, not just the coil.

so you also dont know when to back down. i clearly let you know that i didnt know nearly as much as you and i was doing my best to help. you dont have to be a know-it-all and try to rub it in my face that you know something i dont. yay for you. want a cookie you dick? shesh i always respected you but you are an ass.

also, it wasnt inaccurate. speakers cant play a digital wave. thats all i said. maybe it didnt answer the question, but it wasnt wrong.
