After you add a ~4ms rotational latency, you are looking at 12.x ms on most new 7200rpm IDE HDD's.

i'd say 9 or 10 ms for seek ratings but check out storagereview.com and compare the drives and get an idea before pricing the drives on pricewatch.com or newegg.com

hope this helps

the newer 120 gig wd se hdds are rated 8.9 if you were to add 4ms then 13.1 would be thier rotational latency

<< the WD1200BB, the JB features a 7200 RPM spindle speed coupled with three 40 GB platters. Claimed average seek time is 8.9 milliseconds >>

<< At 13.5 milliseconds, the JB's access times weigh in virtually identical to that of its brother. That is to say, while not horrendous, they don't quite measure up to category leaders such as Maxtor's DiamondMax D740X or IBM's Deskstar 60GXP. Subtracting 4.2 milliseconds to account for the rotational latency of the JB's 7200 RPM spindle speed yields a net measured seek time of 9.3 milliseconds, a bit off WD's 8.9 ms claim. >>

the maxtors mentioned above are 8.0 after subtracting 4.2 ms as per john

so 12 to 13ms would be in the best ballpark for ide although most claim seek ratings of ...
storagereview list their test results as noted above

My 3 Maxtor D740X's consistantly do 11.9 to 12.2ms seek times in HDtach.

My 4 IBM 60GXP's do 12.4 to 13.1.

My 2 Seagate cuda IV's do 13.1-13.9.

thanks doods!!!! :)

i was gunna get the 20gb wd hd..i think the 200bb or something but now i think i will get the 20.0GB DiamondMax Plus D740X 6L020J1 Ultra ATA/133 7200RPM.

the reviews were quite good. with a raid 0 set up, i think i will be blazing along a little faster!! thanks again!!! :)
