What is a decent GPS unit for my car

Looking to spend around $100 to $200 for a basic GPS unit that will give me up to date traffic conditions, so I can avoid the interstate when it is shut down during winter driving conditions.

Costco has the Garmin nuvi 270 for $199, until Sunday, and the Tom tom 130s for $229 right now. Do I need to spend that much for what I'm asking? Or should I just pay that or more. I realize the live traffic thing may have a monthly fee, but that is worth it to me to avoid being late for work, which is really frowned upon. Don't really need speech recognition, or a whole lot of extras.

I love my Garmin Nuvi 200. Simple and gets the job done.
The only bad thing I have found about it is that if you get into an area that has a lot of roads that merge in the same area (like Los Angeles) it can get confused. Also if you have poor satellite reception it can lose track of where you are at.

I like my StreetPilot C550. It speaks street names, receives traffic information, and connects to my bluetooth cell phone for hand-free callings. I bought it from buy.com last December for $169.

I have a Garmin Nuvi 200W. Been great so far. It's traveled with me across the country and hasn't got me lost yet.

If you don't need a pocketable unit, get a Garmin StreetPilot c580 from Amazon.com. Does text-to-speech, has bluetooth, comes with MSN Direct service (one year subscription, traffic info., weather, movie times and locations, gas prices). It has a physical volume dial which is very convenient compared to the on-screen volume control in the Nuvis. If you get one now, you get a free update to the 2009 maps. Oh and it has maps of all of North America.

I think it's going for ~$170 right now at Amazon.com.

there's a free Nuvi 200 from Discover Card thread at Hot Deals, and fatwallet. We got one, works great, especially for free!

Lot's of good info here, thanks all. Looks like I'm kinda fucked with the traffic thing, as it appears this option is only available in big city areas.

Unfortunately I live in the so called boonies on I70 between Glenwood Springs and Denver, where it is almost guaranteed there is a full stop wait for an accident every time it snows. Idiot fucking drivers, and their SUV's

sounds like the best option is an inexpensive GPS without the traffic thing, just to get around when I go to Denver once or twice a year.

If you're gonna splurge $200 a unit, I'd say get a Magellan 4250 for $50 more, or $250 total.

It's a new model and has all the bells and whistles, and a 3 month traffic thingy to see if it works at your area. If it does, great! If not, oh well, only $50 more than the 1430 you suggested above...

We have a Garmin c550, a really nice unit except for the dumb ball type mount. It's not very firm so if you press on the buttons it moves the position of the screen other than that I have no real complaints about the unit.
