What is a Controller-Based Modem

What is meant by a controller-based modem? This terminology is used by US Robotics in describing most of their home modems. Thanks.

It basically means that most/all of the modems compression & functions are performed on the modem itself instead of by your CPU (as it is with winmodems). Someone else can probably give you the full technicalities.........
