What is a CNR slot. I've seen them on the end of the motherboards, but what are they used for?

The communication network riser (CNR) Used to be real common in mobos sold in the far east.

For modems and other network devices.
Some actually connected through the USB bus.

It's for modem or network cards, meant as a last-minute assembly option for large-volume shipments. The card contains only the physical line interface, while the controller logic is down on the mainboard (in the chipset typically). So depending on what has been ordered, the modem or LAN or HomeLAN CNR card gets plugged into the preassembled machine and off they go. In case of the modem, this is also done because phone line interfaces differ from country to country.
