My buddy just picked up a very nice fun over the weekend...I do not even remember what it is called!

I also had never shot a handgun before, so I was wondering what a decent 200-300$ gun was, that I could use for self defense, or for the range with him.

Glock sounds cool :p. time to go fill out my handgun purchasing app!

You're not going to get a glock for 200 bucks unless you have the luck of..well, of someone very lucky. :p

$100-200 handun? good luck in not getting a PoS. You might be able to get a used one in that range, but it might be difficult.

bersa thunder .380s and kel-tec's .380 and 9mm are around $250 or so last time I checked. lots of people love the bersas and i've heard a lot of mixed reviews on the kel-tecs.
i wouldn't want to use either a range gun, shooting for fun, because they are small and made for concealed carry. I own a bersa.

Hrmmm, maybe I should just spend 300-400 and get something OK? I do not even know what they cost!

I know nothing of guns, I just know that one holds 20? My buddy will teach me up on everything.

Good, we need more people to own guns because they think the name "sounds cool".

I dont want one just because it 'sounds cool', I feel everyone should shoot one, once in their life...know how to handle a gun.

Up that to 250ish and pick up a Ruger P89.

They aren't pretty but they are nigh on indestructible.

Yeah, I've actually read good things about them too...though I've never shot one.

You see 'em on COPS all the time (which doesn't indicate a good or bad thing).

Wow, those are cheap...wonder how they shoot then.

If you want cheap get an airsoft pistol. Otherwise you're looking at a decent supply of ammo costing just as much as the gun.

Otherwise, I'd like to think that it's wise to put a little more thought into something that could blow your hand apart even if you're 100% safe with it because of poor quality.

You could maybe get a little .22 pistol like a Ruger Mk III for $200-$300. I also saw a retired police-issue SIG P225 for sale here. The P225 uses an 8-round magazine (not much capacity compared to most semi-autos) and since it's used it might be a bit worn. I've also heard the trigger pull is really bad, as in way too heavy for the first shot. But it is pretty cheap, without being a poorly-built gun. SIGs are generally very good.

If you get it, make sure you get extra mags. They're hard to find for that gun.

Taurus Millennium Pro PT 140 (or 145 if you prefer .45). You can get it for $300. Most comfortable, accurate, reliable concealed carry weapon I have ever used.

I had one and really liked it - if you put Hogue grips on them, they don't look too shabby. I think I should buy it back from my father-in-law. :(

gunbroker.com, but you can just pay a visit to a local shop and probably get much more help... be able to see how the pistol feels in your hand.. etc. You could go to a shop, find a few you like then check them out online.

I own a .45 cal HiPoint. Its ugly and isnt very satisfying to cock (there is no snick-snick) but its accurate enough. Pain in the ass to break down (you have to knock out a retaining pin). can probably get one between $150-$200.

My used Glock 17 (9mm) was $500 and is a lot more fun and cheaper to shoot.

This is why I have a firm philosophy against selling guns :p

Start out with a nice water pistol, maybe a Super Soaker if you want to go high end. Given this post I would not feel it safe to go outside if you had a real weapon.
