What is a box cutter anyway?

When I heard they were using knives and box cutters I just accepted it. But thinking about it now, I've no idea what a box cutter is!
In my mind I was visioning something like one of those big chain cutters, but that's not it I guess.

Anyone care to enlighten me?

They're the ones with the retractable blade... you can buy them in hardware stores (a search on google will find them).

I would bet you could get #29 on that page onto a airline with no problem, that holds a regular single edge razor, and can cause a nasty cut.

Box cutters are called Stanley Knives in the UK and Ireland. It's a brand name for those type of razor sharp knives. Weird, them being able to take over a plane just using those things.

wow, when I was a teen, we used to pilfer them from work all the time! we all figured they were a dime a dozen, like Bic pens. They're 9 bucks each! whoa

My friend told me he took a machette, a collectible to him, but a weapon nonetheless on a cross country flight. they saw it on xray, took it out, looked at it, put it back in.

It was $9 for a box of 12 of them.

They are very sharp and definitely deadly. I cut my finger pretty badly after mishandling one, trying to open a box, many years ago.

When I traveled round the States earlier in the year I carried my plastic toolbox in my backpack as carryon baggage. It had a pistol-grip pnuematic drill (looks like a gun on xray)among other bits. Only on two flights, on from LA and the other from Hartford, both at quiet times did the security people inspect the tool box, and in Hartford they took it off me and sent it as secured checked baggage.
I bet the security people at those three airports are having a good look at themselves.
