I currently have a AMD Athlon 64 3000+ Venice core and a 7800 GT. I have about $300 to spend. The 7900 GT is $299 and the X2 is $297. Which would be the best upgrade? The 7900GT and stay with the 3000+ or the 3800+ X2 and stay with the 7800GT??

If ur using ur comp for anything else beside gaming the dual core is really nice to have, lag be gone.

I recon x2 would be better, either get the x2 or just save the money and wait for next gen gfx card.

I use my computer 99% of the time for playing COD2 so would the X2 be a better upgrade?

Well are u happy currently with the performance of ur 7800gt?
If so there is no reason to really upgrade.

Really there is not much point going dual core if u dont need one, but from my use of one its really sweet, before i could not even use msn while watching tv on my single core as it would turn into a slide show, now i can encode a dvd, dual prime, watch tv and play a game at the same time with zero lag :p. In some games i also noticed that the game play was much smoother.

Maybe get some nice toys like a mouse/keyboard/nice case/fancy PSU or maybe a new monitor-- that stuff will last you probably longer than a 7900gt. Plus, your system is pretty good already, especially if that 3000 is overclocked.

Unless you can sell that 7800GT for say $200 i wouldn't bother, if you can sell the 7800GT for that then buy yourself a 7900GTX or a X1900XTX instead.

The step up to a 7900GT is not worth that much money under any circumstances, and if you're a gamer first and foremost then the dual core is a waste of money at this time (get dual core when it does help, not just in case it helps)

Why would the dual core be a waste of money for gaming? Is the dual core helpful only for multitasking? Would it not help my frame rates and load times?

I know of two games that dual core helps with, oblivion shows a 15% improvement going from a single core CPU to a dual core CPU, and i think that one of the quake variants likes dual core too. (That's with a much more powerful GPU than yours, so it could well be a non issue for you)

However in nearly every other game dual core does very little for performance, a fast single core CPU is enough for now, if you can sell on the 7800GT and get a X1900XT then you're going to get far more performance than by getting the 3800X2.

Overclocking Bob, overclocking. ;) The 7900GT can get well over 700/800 core with a good voltmod...

Eh, a 7900GT won't be much of an improvement over the 7800GT. Dual core is nice, but not really necessary right now. Just save the money.

Yeah, and how far would a X1900XT go with a much simpler software voltmod or a BIOS flash to XTX status? ;)

well in my opinion, if you get a 7900GT, you'll prolly get around a 10% increase in frames. otherwise, its just a die shrink of a 7800GT with 4 more pipes/7800GTX.

i would get a X2 3800+ because you can probably say goodbye to your desktop lag (if any). it will be a better investment for you, as video cards tend to get outdated fairly quickly. besides, in a couple of months, the geforce 8 series will have come out (or whenever) and they will support HDCP and all this crazy stuff. it will blow away all the 7800/7900's running in SLI with just 1 card.

so X2 3800+ if you had to choose or save your money. though you venice 3000+ is still good. how about you OCing it? hehe...then you will be quite amazed at how fast it runs.

get the x2. it will last longer and provide a better boost. the card difference betweem the 7800gt and the 7900gt is not as great as the dif between the 3000 and the x2.

Neither one will make much difference, is 10% worth $300?

Put it in an INGDirect account until you have enough for an upgrade that will make a real improvement.

Personally if you stuck a gun to my head I'd opt for the X2 as the 7800GT is plenty fast for me. Really you have no need for a processor OR GPU upgrade especially if all you're doing is playing COD. Get a nice monitor or a kickass surround sound system or if you've already got that get a X -Fi Fatal1ty FPS :p

Really, I'd save the cash and see what's cheap at the end of the year. ;)

a 3800x2 is waAAAyyy better than upgrading from 7800gt to 7900gt

unless going from 754 to 939 then it would be 20xs better

oh it says nf4 so yeah a 3800x2 is better than the small vid card upgrade and 2 fast cores are better than 1 slow one

i'd say you shouldnt upgrade your video till you can get a DX10 capable card. It just seems silly to throw away another $300 when you'll only be getting another few FPS and zero new features. As for the dual core, it seems that there are more games using multithreading, which is good for dual cores, but you might want to wait a little while for the AM2 CPUs to come out, since i imagine that will drop prices on the "old" socket 939 chips, even though AM2 seems to bring nothing in the way of performance gain. If you do buy a dual core chip, you may want to try an opteron, since they tend to clock higher on average, and they all have 1MB cache.

Get the X2 or get a new monitor/mouse/speakers.... The video card is essentially a 7800GTX, and i reckon you got the 7800GT because it wasnt worth the money for the GTX. The 7900Gt is no doubt a good deal, but its not much faster and its a useless upgrade. The X2 will give you a nice boost, since its 2ghz instead of 1.8ghz, and your multitasking will be spectacular. Still though its not a huge upgrade, but its the better of the two.

Between that CPU and video card, get the CPU.

Dual core.... because the game will atleast recieve plenty of resources from one of the cores while the OS uses the other. Plus games will use dual core more and more. You already have a 7800gt which is a powerful card in itself, just wait until next gen gpu's come out.

You can get one from Dell using their coupons. Maybe the discount will be similar to future price drops.

I definitely would get an upgradrd X2, but that my choice. I'm planning to upgrade from my 3500+ to an 4800+, when prices drop.
