Been planning to buy a laptop and saw an ACER Travelmate 4000 series with a 15.4 screen. In what way and how much better is it than a regular 15" screen? Compaq have brought out a 14"widesreen. What is that?

It's better because it's bigger :p. 15.4" screens are usually widescreens, and it allows you to cram more stuff on the screen, but because it's bigger, the laptop automaticaly becomes bigger. My laptop has a 15.4" widescreen and I like it.

You need to go to a bestbuy or compusa and look at the widescreens yourself.

Some people love the wide screens, some people hate them.

I love/hate them.

For some things they are wonderful, spreadsheets and movies rock.

But working on a document, or browsing the web, you are probably better off with a standard screen.

On my 1900x1200 15.4" wide screen D800 a standard web page does not even fill 1/2 the screen, so most of the time I feel like I am working on a 10" or smaller notebook. You can expand word documents to fill the screen, but then you only get like 1/2 the lines on screen you normaly would get, again making it feel like you are working on a lot smaller screen. If you like ittybitty things this is all swell, you can fit two web pages or two documents side by side, but again working on those documents will feel like working on 10" notebook.

OTOH, pop in a DVD, and I am in heaven.....

It's more than a 0.4" difference. The 15.4" display has the following dimensions: 13" x 8.25" so the aspect ratio is different vs a 15" display.

15.4" aspect ratio is 16:10,
15" aspect ratio is 4:3

Does that mean you cannot get svga or xga on 15.4 (with out being streached or modifed ) if so does that streaching make svga and xga undesirable on 15.4

Which other resolution fits 15.4 other than the native wxga

As a quick note. You can turn off stretching completely on the widescreens and have black bars all the way around.

Or you can have it stretch it and keep the aspect ratio, normally only leaving bars on the left and right.

Or you can have it fill the screen and stretch both ways which means it'll look kind of squished.
