mIRC with SysReset script. Such a simple yet useful-featured script. I cringe when I see people's messages on IRC followed by some sort of Invision tag. I think "ugh, people use that billion-feature-95%-useless software?"

If you just use IRC for chatting there are alternates. But MIRC is by far the client for downloading, serving etc.

BitchX is a amateurly designed joke used by wannabe leet haxors stuck in 1998. And its away/quit/etc messages are retarded.

irssi is the clear winner for console.

I've used BitchX, xchat, mirc, trillian, and gaim for IRC. mIRC is my favorite hands down. Besides, BitchX isn't any easier to chat with than telnet is.

I don't agree, I used LiCe for years, after LiCe died out I moved to Atlantis (which is the best ircII script I've ever used BTW) BitchX stock is horrible, but it had tons of support/add-ons and with a little modding it could be made so sick.

Perhaps. But why bother ricing up a bad irc client when you can just use a sensible one that works well out of the box and doesn't make you look like a 14 year old?

BitchX isn't that bad. :p

But irssi is definitely better.

Uhh BitchX doesn't make you look like anything, unless people /ctcp version me they'd have no idea what I was running. ircII+Atlantis is still probably my tops, it does exactly what I want, with zero problems.

I dunno why but when I tried BitchX+Crackrock it just felt right to me. irssi is good, but just doesn't have the script support ircII clients do yet.

I've been using mIRC since around 95 and since that time I've been constantly looking for a replacement, but the fact is there isn't one. I'm not a big fan of mIRC's gui, the author is too into flowers and ugly icons. But mIRC has everything you need and where it fails, the billion or so scripts written for it pick up. I wrote my own script somewhere around 97 and I've been using it ever since.

There are other clients that get recommended a lot, but most of them arn't for Windows, such as BitchX / etc for linux/unix. When it comes to windows, mIRC dominates and will continue to do so until a decent client comes out.
