What intel CPU puts out the best?

For seti, I can upgrade my wifes pc using the P3 700e I have in mine as it won't do 933
at default voltage. Best I can get at default is 925 (but that is pretty close)
It does real well pumping out about 6 WU's a day. Then I could get a better cpu in mine and both would be great.
Or I could get her a celeron2 and overclock it and just keep what I've got for me.
Does anyone have stats for celeron2 versus P3 running seti clock for clock?
Will a 900mhz Celeron2 (OC of course) pump as many blocks in the same amount of time as a 900mhz P3?

Hi Wiz,

Getting 925 MHz out of a 700e is not too bad. I have one that runs at 945 MHz and another that is not stable past 910 MHz. But, the output isn't much different.

I also have three Cel2-600's running at 900 MHz. The average time on a Celly2 is about 5 hrs 5 mins, with a "normal" WU. The PIII's are faster as you know from personal experience. But, for the money the Celly2 is a pretty good deal assuming you already have a mobo that supports it. This weekend I am buying a 633 or 667 and trying for 1 GHz.

Good luck!

Interesting, I thought that might be the case due to the different kind and amount of cache on the P3.
The guy I got the P3 from guarantees it to go up to 933 and he is a great guy so I think he is looking for a better one for me now. I will probably keep this one for the wife and get a better one for me, I don't want to do a return on him for something that is this close to doing what he guarantees. ;)
I still gotta do something with that K62 450 box... 1.5 WU's a day is pretty slow.
If I get another bx board I can put the wifes cel300a @ 505 in the kids replacing the K62 and then upgrade the wifes with this P3 and get another guaranteed overclockable cpu for mine.
That sounds like the ticket, then I can be doing about 15 WU's a day.

You are starting to sound like me! I have so much computer stuff in my apartment that I have the bedroom window open (cracked) and the A/C on to keep the temp at the tolerable level! I may have problems when the weather warms up. :):D

heheheheh... my wife affectionately refers to my area as the 'computer graveyard'
I tell her that stuffs a gold mine, theres lots of guys here at the FS forum who would pay money for that stuff. You can guess what she says to that...

heheheh... more power is better eh?
Just got good news from the major chip supplier here on Anandtech - he has a chip he thinks will treat me right. So hopefully this time next week will see another upgrade.
Now to find a used bh6 or bx2 mobo for cheap, get rid of that K62 450 (For Sale forum here I come...)

Sounds like you're off to a great start, Wiz!

Those Cel 2s are a bit dissapointing compared to P3s at SETI. I had a Cel2 566@935 :) that was averaging right at 5 hours with a Cli ver 3.0 client. I just put a P2 400@500 in the same board that averages about 6.25 hours, but it has only done 9 units so far. Assimilator1 has a P3 ~850 that smokes my times with the 935.

Celery is great for RC5 and OGR, but the P3s are the best at Seti.:) That K6-2 450 is a great OGR machine, but they really suck at Seti.:p

BTW, Welcome to TA Wiz.

Thanks viztech, yeah my p3 700e @ 925 does a WU in just right at 4 hours (Ver 3 cmd line).
Gotta get me some more o'dat.

Do you have any voltage adjustment on the MB?, just a little tweak would likely have you running at 933. And don't fret about the little extra voltage, that's what Intel does when it's pushing the limits after all. :)

Also, what kind of timing are you running your memory at? That's actually the limiting factor on my P3 700@933 rig, if I cut the memory back to it's slowest settings it's stable at 980. At 933 I still can't be completely agressive on the memory timing or it shows some instability.

If the MB doesn't support voltage adjustments there are hacks of the Voltage ID pins that are fairly easy... :D

Yeah, it doesn't matter how fast or slow I set the memory etc... The problem is I have the CUSL2-C mobo and the 'cold boot' problem. I can get the voltage set up to 1.8 or 1.85V and then boot up at 933. If I shut down and restart this mobo defaults it's Vcore voltage to 1.65 and it won't boot at 933mhz. So, I have to get a chip that will boot 133fsb at default voltage, those are quite a bit more rare from what Compuwiz1 tells me, although he has one testing on his bench tonight.
By the way, I am running 256megs of Mosel guaranteed 222 @ 143fsb so that's not the issue - it's the default voltage that is holding me back here.
Oh yeah, and the pin trick on the P3 700e only works at 2.05V - that's too hot for me.

Tieing together or isolating the appropriate pins allows for any permitted voltages

VID3 .... VID2 .... VID1 .... VID0 .... Vcc(core)
..1...........1............1............1.............1.30
..1...........1............1............0.............1.35
..1...........1............0............1.............1.40
..1...........1............0............0.............1.45
..1...........0............1............1.............1.50
..1...........0............1............0.............1.55
..1...........0............0............1.............1.60
..1...........0............0............0.............1.65
..0...........1............1............1.............1.70
..0...........1............1............0.............1.75
..0...........1............0............1.............1.80
..0...........1............0............0.............1.85
..0...........0............1............1.............1.90
..0...........0............1............0.............1.95
..0...........0............0............1.............2.00
..0...........0............0............0.............2.05

VID 0 AL35
VID 1 AM36
VID 2 AL37
VID 3 AJ37

0 = ground 1 = Hi or open

If you're handy with a soldering iron you can mod the MB, I usually just use a little wire wrap wire and tie some pins together.

AK36 is a nearby Vss/ground, some nail polish or insulation on the right pins and tie together AK36 and AJ37 and you've got whatever voltage you want.

WARNING!!! for anyone else, these pins are only for socket370 P3's/celerons.

Ok, meatcutter told me with the cBo P3 700e fcpga the only one that works is the 2.05V
I assumed he knew what he was talking about... Now I'm just confused.
